    Barred Owl- Strix varia
This beautiful Barred Owl, Strix varia, was found in my good friend Mark McPhail's backyard in Oxford, Ohio in early October. Mark said he's seen the bird several times this fall. He was kind enough to share the photo with me. Photo by Mark McPhail.

While in Louisiana (in Jean Lafitte National Park) on our way to Costa Rica in the Spring, 2004
, we came across Barred Owl Parents feeding their chicks CRAWFISH caught in the surrounding swamps! It was an amazing sight to see!

In fact, check out a QUICKTIME Video
of Barred Owl Chicks (Strix varia) being fed Crawfish in the swamps of southern Louisiana, Jean Lafitte National Park. Only in Louisiana!
